For everyone who doesn't know, I got my undergraduate degree at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (aka FAMU, FAMU, FAM got damn U). I love my alma mater to death, and I wouldn't trade my experience that I gained for anything in the world. However, after having a conversation with someone from another HBCU, I realize how much my degree program at FAMU did not prepare me for life after FAMU. I graduated with my BS in Psychology, and for all who don't know the Psychology program at FAMU is very Pro-Black. Meaning, that they do not really teach western psychology theories. This is great in learning how to deal with people from your own culture, and if you are going to get your MS or Ph.D from FAMU, but this can be very detrimental if you decide to go to another HBCU or a PWI. After I graduated from FAMU I did decide to go to a PWI because I wanted the experience of going to one. I was also told that it is a good idea to get your graduate degree from a different school than you got your undergraduate degree. So, I chose to go to FSU and get my MS/Ed.S in Counseling. My ability to be a very fast learner kept me from being completely lost. Also, some of my professors from FAMU who didn't completely embrace the whole pro-black philosophy for providing me some background information about western psychology.
After I my conversation with my friend in a psychology program at another HBCU I feel some type of way about my actually learning experience at FAMU. I almost feel as if I was cheated out of an education somehow. Don't get me wrong, I did learn a lot about working with my culture and it is very beneficial information, but it wasn't helpful for woking in the predominately white America or going to school at a PWI.
Am I wrong for feeling this way about my beloved FAMU?
